General Electives


7th & 8th Grade Speech
This course is designed to introduce the student to the fundamentals of public speaking and drama through the fun and creative use of storytelling. Students will be expected to perform individually as well as in groups thus giving them a variety of avenues to learn. Some of the material covered in this course includes the following: eye contact, vocal control, poise, use of the dramatic V, physical and mental character development, basic theatre terminology and concepts.

Fine Arts Electives


6th Grade Art

Sixth Grade Art is an introduction to Visual Art in which students will have opportunities to realise and develop their God given talents and creative abilities through production of artwork. Students will be introduced to the Elements and Principles of Art as tools for creation as well as spend class time in hands on exploration of a variety of art media. Various techniques and media will be incorporated in the production of both two and three-dimensional artwork. Artwork content and planning will be highlighted, along with art history and art criticism. This course is based primarily on artwork production.

7th & 8th Grade Art
Middle School students in 7th and 8th grades will have an opportunity to explore their God given talents and creative abilities through hands on production of artwork. An emphasis will be placed on discovering what it means to be a Christian in the visual arts. Students will begin personal exploration of individual style and ability based on the seven elements of design: line, value, texture, shape, form, space, and color and the eight art principles: emphasis, pattern, rhythm, balance, proportion, movement, variety and harmony. Various techniques and media will be incorporated in the production of both two and three-dimensional artwork as it relates to the elements and principles being discussed. Art history and art criticism will be implemented throughout the course. This course is primarily production based.

6th Grade Band
Beginning Band starts in the 6th grade and each student takes a music aptitude test to help the director understand which instrument is better suited for them. This class teaches basic fundamentals for playing any instrument in the band program. Students display their talent at Grandparent’s Day, Christmas Showcase, and our Spring Showcase. Students will need to purchase their own instrument, except for larger instruments like, tenor & baritone saxophones and tuba. Strings are not offered at this time.

7th & 8th Grade Band
The MCA Middle School Concert Band is for grades 7th-8th. This is the next level of musicianship after beginning band and performance opportunities increase and include events such as football games, pep rallies, Grandparent’s Day, Christmas Showcase, and Spring Showcase. Students who have not had beginning band in 6th grade OR who have not been in band for at least 1 year, must audition and must take summer private lessons to get caught up to the proper level of musicianship. If in the 8th grade there is no previous musical experience a student will not be allowed to take the band class. Drumline is introduced at this level and participates as a separate entity during pep rallies. Students will need to purchase their own instrument, except for larger instruments like, tenor & baritone saxophones and tuba. Electric Bass guitar is only in Jazz Band and/or high school praise band, not concert band. Strings, are not offered at this time.

6th Grade Choir

Sixth Grade Choir seeks to show that God created music as a gift to enjoy as well as to use in worship. The course encourages enjoyment of music through group participation,sight singing skills, theory, and music history. As students develop choral singing techniques, they have opportunities to demonstrate skills learned as individuals as well as members of a large ensemble in a variety of performance venues.

Middle School Choir

Middle School Choir continues to reinforce choral techniques and build sight-reading skills. The choir participates in the ACSI choral Festival and Sandy Lake Fun Fest. They also have performance opportunities in chapel and at the Christmas and Spring concerts.

Technology Electives


6th Grade Technology
This class provides students with both keyboarding and word processing instruction using a web-based program called Easy Tech Keyboarding and Word Processing. The instruction for keyboarding will include the use of all of the keys on the keyboard, correct finger placement, and keying data quickly and accurately. The word processing instruction will include creating, formatting, and editing documents. This course will incorporate the lessons from the online program to aid in completion of projects from other core classes including Science, Bible, Social Studies, Latin, and English.

7th Grade Technology
The 7th grade technology curriculum is an overview of how to use technology to become life-long learners. Through Project-Based Learning (PBL) activities, students will strengthen both keyboarding and word processing skills learned in 6th grade. By the end of the semester, students will have been introduced to essential computer concepts; exploring the basics of Microsoft Windows; managing files and folders; browsers and emails; and creating, editing, and formatting documents using MS Word. Students will also use digital media and environment to communicate and work collaboratively.

8th Grade Technology
The 8th grade technology curriculum is as an overview of how to use technology to become life-long learners. There is a strong emphasis on comprehension, problem-solving, critical thinking, and experiential learning with real-world applications. The beginning of the course will focus on the Christian worldview of computers and the ethics of their use in the business place. They also learn how to protect their private information from malicious people and websites while on the Internet and learn some of the history of computers. Students will be given opportunities to express and grow in their creativity through a variety of Web-based tools. Students will use digital media and environment to communicate and work collaboratively, along with the use of desktop publishing to share and present information. The course includes learning multimedia components such graphics, images, music, sound, and visual displays.
