Math Classes

6th Grade Math
God has created an ordered universe and given us creative and analytical minds to visualize and explore the pattern and function of mathematics. Sixth grade math uses conceptual understanding as the base from which new skills and concepts are built. An emphasis is placed on critical-thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and the application of information to daily situations. Areas covered include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers and fractions, graphing, statistics, division of decimals, geometry, measurement, percent, integers and probability.

7th Grade Math
Throughout this course, a solid foundation is set to build future math skills. Students are challenged to become proficient in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing expressions including decimals, fractions, integers, and rational numbers. They will learn to solve one and two-step equations as well as work with ration, proportion and percentages. Geometry, measurement, area and volume will also be covered. Students who excel in this course and demonstrate success on the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test will be given the opportunity to enroll in Algebra I in eighth grade.

Pre-Algebra (7th or 8th Grade)
This course takes foundational skills learned in Math 7 to a deeper level of complexity and enables students to fine-tune their understanding of setting up and solving equations. Proficiency in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing equations, working with integers, as well as rational and real numbers is developed. Students learn how to apply their knowledge of ration, proportion and percentages as well as formulas for finding area, volume, and analyzing other geometric figures with varying degrees of complexity.

Algebra 1
(8th Grade)
The Algebra I class combines existing math skills with abstract thinking to solve various problems. The class is designed to broaden the student’s general math skills and prepare them for high mathematics in high school. Students will study mathematical principles regarding exponents, polynomials, systems of equations, graphing linear equations and inequalities, rational numbers, radicals, functions, and quadratic equations.
