National Merit Commended Scholars 2014
National Merit Commended Scholars 2014

The PSAT is not only the precursor to the SAT, it is the the National Merit Qualifying Test for the scholarship competition junior year. The content of the PSAT is designed to measure students’ college readiness at the 11th grade level in critical reading, mathematics, and writing. We administer the PSAT to all MCA students in grades 9, 10, and 11 to measure their progress toward college readiness and to practice and prepare for the SAT college entrance exam. Students’ score reports provide valuable feedback to students on their strengths, weaknesses, and potential gaps in learning as well as study skills to improve. The PSAT score reports also include predictors of success in specific AP courses to aid us in course planning. “And research shows that students in U.S. schools who take the PSAT/NMSQT in 10th and 11th grades score, on average, 189 points higher on the SAT than students who do not.” (

We value the measures of student learning and the practice provided to the students. We encourage our sophomores to begin preparing for the PSAT in the summer prior to junior year. Those seeking national merit recognition typically study intensely to prepare for the scholarship competition.

MCA is proud to claim 1 National Merit Scholar, 14 National Merit Commended Scholars, and 2 National Hispanic Scholars in the past 10 years.
