Academic Planning

Course Planning: In the spring, fifth, sixth, and seventh grade students and their parents are guided through the course selection process for the following school year.  Eighth grade students will participate in a full orientation to the upper school and prepare a full four-year high school course plan.  See the Orientation section for further information.

Schedules: Student schedules are prepared based upon the students’ course selections.  Priority is given to those who return the course selection forms by the stated deadline. Classes are then filled on a first-come, first-served basis as some elective choices have limited space.  Students are enrolled in the courses for the full year; there are no changes made mid-year.

Math Placement: Each spring, sixth and seventh grade students are given a math algebra readiness assessment in school to aid us in placing students in the appropriate math course for the following year.  The results of this assessment, the ACT ASPIRE math scores, the math report card grades and teacher recommendation are all considered together in determining the best fit math placement for each student.  Parents will be notified in the summer of the placement for the student.

Orientation to Upper School: A special orientation to the Upper School will be held for students during the school day and parents at night early in the Spring semester. The purpose is to give students and their families an understanding of the offerings in the upper school and the changes to anticipate. The upper school four-year course plan will be introduced with guides to assist families in completing the plan. Appointments are available with the Academic Counselor following this orientation to provide guidance and answer questions. Further information on the four year plan is located in the Upper School section.
