Senior High English/Literature Courses

World Literature I (9th Grade)

World Literature I is the study of literature from a Biblical perspective and within the historical time periods of 16th century Mexico, Elizabethan England, Victorian England, 725 B.C. Greece, and a sci-fi futuristic American setting. Integrated within each piece of literature, students will expand their vocabulary and sentence structure skills, applying it through writing modes of research papers, personal essays, personal narratives, and poems. Each quarter, an analysis of one book from a designated outside reading list is required. (1 Credit)

World Literature II (10th Grade)

World Literature II expands on the study of world literature from a Biblical perspective and within historical time periods spanning diverse points of the globe and sundry times. Studies will not only include novels but will expand into in-depth analysis of other genres: short story, play, and poetry. Integrated within each piece of literature, students will expand their vocabulary and develop a personal writing style, to be applied as they refine their writing skills through various modes of creative narrative, persuasive, and expository writing. Each quarter, an analysis of one book from a designated outside reading list is required. Prerequisite: World Literature I (1 Credit)

American Literature (11th Grade)

American Literature explores works from a Biblical perspective and within the historical time periods spanning from Puritan New England to postmodern era, wherein students will study movements/ages and how literary characteristics reflect the developing, changing American society. Studies will include the novel, yet also span into uniquely early-American compositions such as diaries, personal narratives, sermons, Jeremiads, etc. Integrated within each piece of literature, students will expand their vocabulary and continue to develop a personal writing style, which will be applied through various modes of creative narrative, persuasive, and expository writing. Each quarter, an analysis of one book from a designated outside reading list is required. Prerequisite: 10th Grade English (1 Credit)

British Literature (12th Grade)

British Literature delves into literature from a biblical perspective and within historical time periods, offering studies from the Middle Ages through the 20th Century wherein students will study movements/ages and how literary characteristics reflect the developing, changing British society. Integrated within each piece of literature studied, students will expand their vocabulary and continue to develop a personal writing style, which will be applied as they enhance their writing skills as well as critical thinking and problem solving through the modes of writing, such as research papers, business writing, observation reports, and classification essays. Each quarter, an analysis of one book from a designated outside reading list is required. Prerequisite: American Literature (1 Credit)

AP American Literature (11th or 12th Grade)

AP American Literature explores a vast array of works within time periods spanning from Puritan New England to the postmodern era, wherein students will study movements/ages and how literary characteristics reflect the developing, changing American society. Studies will include the novel, yet also span into uniquely early-American compositions such as diaries, personal narratives, sermons, Jeremiads, etc. Students will analyze each piece of literature Biblically, historically, stylistically narratilogically, sociologically, and politically. Writing will be highly analytical and weekly in frequency. Each quarter, analyses of multiple books from a designated outside reading list are required. Prerequisite: Instructor's permission (1 Credit)

AP Language & Composition (11th or 12th Grade)

AP Language and Composition is designed to allow serious secondary students interested in receiving a semester of college credit for high school studies to attempt reading and writing to discern a writer's rhetorical purpose, audience expectations, and subjects as well as the way language contributes to effectiveness in writing. Students may take a national examination in May, for a fee, to endeavor to earn college credit for English requirements. Taught from a Biblical perspective and within historical and rhetorical context via works originating from America, Britian and the world, the course engages students in careful reading and critical analysis of nonfiction, wherein the student will deepen his/her understanding of rhetoric and argument. Prerequisite: Instructor's permission (1 Credit)
